a guide to making matcha

Making matcha is simple, but a few key techniques will help you get the best flavor and texture. Follow these steps for a smooth, frothy cup:

1. Heat Your Water

Matcha is best prepared with water that’s hot but not boiling. Aim for 175°F (80°C)—this is when the water is lightly steaming but not bubbling.

2. Sift and Whisk the Matcha Paste

Use a fine mesh sieve to sift about 1 teaspoon (2 grams) of matcha into your cup or bowl. This prevents clumping and ensures a smoother texture.

Add a small splash of hot water (about 1 ounce) to the matcha powder. Using a bamboo whisk (chasen) or any whisk you have on hand, whisk vigorously until the matcha forms a smooth, thick paste. This step helps the matcha dissolve evenly.

3. Add More Water and Whisk Until Frothy

Pour in 8–12 ounces of hot water, depending on your preferred strength. Then, whisk briskly in a zigzag motion until the matcha becomes frothy and light. This aerates the tea and enhances its creamy texture.

Enjoy!

Matcha is traditionally enjoyed on its own, but you can also add a splash of milk or a sweetener if you prefer. Drink immediately for the best taste and texture.
